Java Developer - COBOL Modernization Project

Helpware is seeking a Java Developer to join a large-scale enterprise modernization initiative focused on transforming legacy COBOL/CICS applications into a modern Java-based architecture. This is an excellent opportunity for developers with 1–2 years of commercial experience to contribute to a long-term enterprise project in healthcare industry while working with established frameworks, clear technical specifications, and experienced engineering teams. Please note: This role is focused exclusively on backend Java development. No COBOL knowledge is required, and all development tasks will be provided in Java-based technical specifications. Project Duration: 8–12 months with possible extension Responsibilities: Develop Java-based solutions according to detailed technical specifications provided by subject matter experts Implement Java Enterprise components, including handlers, Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs), and Data Access Objects (DAOs) Develop business logic and database interaction layers Create and optimize SQL queries and database integrations Write, execute, and maintain unit tests Deliver clean, maintainable, and well-documented code following established coding standards Participate in code reviews and support integration activities Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure successful project delivery Requirements: 1–2 years of commercial Java development experience Strong knowledge of core Java programming concepts Experience with Java Enterprise Edition (Java EE) Familiarity with Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs) and Data Access Objects (DAOs) Experience writing unit tests Good understanding of SQL and relational databases Ability to work within established frameworks and follow detailed technical specifications Strong analytical and problem-solving skills English level - B2 or better Technical Environment: Java Enterprise Edition (Java EE) Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) Data Access Objects (DAO) SQL Databases IBM Rational Application Developer (RAD) IBM WebSphere Application Server Angular-based frontend ecosystem (backend-focused role) We Offer: Fully remote work from anywhere in Mexico or South America Opportunity to work on a large-scale enterprise modernization project Long-term project engagement with potential extension opportunities Collaboration with experienced architects, project managers, and subject matter experts Competitive compensation Supportive and collaborative team culture We sincerely thank all applicants for their interest.
