[Remote] Engineer I (TypeScript and AWS)
Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. Mutual of Omaha is a company focused on providing health insurance solutions, and they are seeking an Engineer I to design and deliver cloud-native applications using TypeScript and AWS. The role involves building scalable systems for real-time claims processing and improving operational efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain cloud-native applications and services in TypeScript, leveraging modern frameworks and best practices
- Design and implement event-driven architectures on AWS (Lambda, Step Functions, SQS, EventBridge) to support high-volume claims workflows
- Develop APIs and microservices that enable real-time claims intake, validation, adjudication, and servicing
- Partner with product and claims operations teams to translate complex insurance processes into scalable, automated digital solutions
- Implement resilient, highly available systems that ensure accuracy, compliance, and performance in claims processing
- Contribute to and evolve reference architectures and engineering standards for serverless and distributed systems
- Optimize systems for throughput, latency, and cost efficiency in a high-volume transaction environment
- Continuously improve claims workflows by designing systems that reduce manual effort, errors, and processing time
Skills
- Strong hands-on experience developing in TypeScript (Node.js ecosystem preferred)
- Proven experience building solutions in AWS, especially serverless and event-driven architectures
- Experience designing and building distributed systems, APIs, and microservices
- Ability to model and optimize complex, transaction-heavy workflows (experience with claims or similar operational systems is a plus)
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify inefficiencies and engineer scalable solutions
- Experience working in Agile environments with a product and customer-centric mindset
- Ability to collaborate cross-functionally and translate business processes into technical architecture
- Passion for modern engineering practices including automation, observability, and DevOps

- Able to work remotely with access to a high-speed internet connection and located in the United States or Puerto Rico
- Deep experience with: AWS Lambda, Step Functions, SQS, EventBridge
- Infrastructure as Code (CloudFormation, CDK, Terraform)
- Serverless frameworks and patterns
- Experience with Java
- Familiarity with insurance or healthcare claims systems (adjudication, eligibility, payments)
- Experience building event-driven, decoupled systems at scale
- Knowledge of data streaming, messaging systems, or workflow orchestration
- Experience mentoring engineers and contributing to engineering standards
