Position Overview

arenaflex is seeking a seasoned Senior Data Engineer to lead the design, development, and operationalization of large‑scale data pipelines. This remote role focuses on building robust, automated solutions that ingest, transform, and store data from diverse sources, enabling analytics teams and business stakeholders to make data‑informed decisions. The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise with a strategic mindset, thriving in a fast‑paced environment where complex problems are solved with elegant, scalable architectures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architect, develop, and maintain end‑to‑end data pipelines that handle petabyte‑scale datasets using AWS services (e.g., S3, Redshift, Glue, Lambda) and modern SQL/NoSQL technologies.
  • Collaborate with data scientists, product managers, and engineering leads to translate business requirements into technical specifications and scalable data solutions.
  • Design and implement data models that support both operational reporting and advanced analytics, ensuring high performance, reliability, and security.
  • Automate data quality checks, monitoring, and alerting mechanisms to proactively identify and resolve pipeline failures.
  • Lead cross‑functional initiatives that modernize legacy data workflows, improve data latency, and increase overall system resilience.
  • Mentor junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning, code review excellence, and best‑in‑class engineering practices.
  • Partner with external vendors and technology partners to evaluate, integrate, and optimize third‑party data solutions.
  • Document architecture decisions, data lineage, and operational procedures to support knowledge sharing across the organization.
  • Stay current with emerging data technologies and industry trends, recommending strategic investments that align with arenaflex’s long‑term vision.
  • Participate in on‑call rotations and incident response, applying sound judgment to resolve critical production issues swiftly.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
  • 5+ years of hands‑on experience building and operating large‑scale data pipelines in a cloud environment, preferably AWS.
  • Proficiency in SQL and at least one programming language such as Python, Java, or Scala.
  • Demonstrated expertise with data warehousing solutions (e.g., Amazon Redshift, Snowflake, BigQuery) and ETL/ELT tools.
  • Strong understanding of data modeling concepts, including star and snowflake schemas, dimensional modeling, and normalization.
  • Experience with containerization (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes, Airflow) for workflow automation.
  • Solid grasp of data governance, security best practices, and compliance frameworks (e.g., GDPR, CCPA).
  • Excellent problem‑solving abilities, with a track record of diagnosing complex data issues and delivering robust solutions.
  • Effective communication skills, capable of translating technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills

  • Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in a quantitative discipline.
  • Certifications such as AWS Certified Big Data – Specialty or Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer.
  • Hands‑on experience with streaming platforms (Kafka, Kinesis) and real‑time analytics.
  • Familiarity with machine learning pipelines and feature stores.
  • Background in the aviation or transportation sector, understanding of flight operations data.
  • Leadership experience in agile, scrum, or DevOps environments.

Core Competencies & Attributes

  • Analytical Mindset: Ability to dissect large, complex datasets, identify patterns, and propose data‑driven strategies.
  • Strategic Vision: Think beyond immediate tasks to design architectures that support future business growth.
  • Collaboration: Work seamlessly with cross‑functional teams, fostering trust and shared ownership of outcomes.
