Position Overview

We are seeking a Senior Data Engineer to lead the design, development, and optimization of large‑scale data pipelines that power critical business insights for arenaflex. This role is fully remote, offering a competitive hourly rate of $24 and a flexible 8‑hour workday. You will partner with data scientists, product managers, and senior leadership to translate complex business requirements into robust, scalable data solutions built on AWS, SQL, and modern data engineering best practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Gather, ingest, and transform massive, complex data sets from diverse internal and external sources to meet both functional and analytical business needs.
  • Design, implement, and maintain end‑to‑end data pipelines that enable real‑time and batch processing, ensuring high availability, reliability, and performance.
  • Architect and execute system redesigns that improve scalability, data throughput, and operational efficiency, including the automation of manual processes.
  • Build and maintain the infrastructure for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) of data using AWS services (e.g., S3, Redshift, Glue, Lambda) and advanced SQL techniques.
  • Develop analytical tools and dashboards that provide actionable insights into key performance indicators such as operational efficiency, customer acquisition, and revenue growth.
  • Collaborate closely with cross‑functional partners—including data, product, engineering, and leadership teams—to understand data‑related technical challenges and deliver tailored solutions.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and data analysts, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous learning.
  • Stay abreast of emerging data technologies and industry trends, recommending innovative approaches that keep arenaflex at the forefront of data engineering.
  • Document architecture, data models, and processes to ensure clear communication and maintainability across the organization.
  • May perform additional duties as assigned by senior leadership to support strategic initiatives and operational excellence.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of hands‑on experience designing, building, and maintaining large‑scale data pipelines in a production environment.
  • Proficiency with AWS data services (S3, Redshift, Athena, Glue, Lambda, Kinesis) and strong SQL expertise (performance tuning, complex queries, stored procedures).
  • Demonstrated ability to work with structured and unstructured data, including JSON, CSV, Parquet, and streaming formats.
  • Solid understanding of data modeling concepts, data warehousing, and ETL best practices.
  • Experience with orchestration tools such as Apache Airflow, AWS Step Functions, or similar workflow managers.
  • Strong analytical mindset with the ability to translate business requirements into technical specifications.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills, capable of diagnosing complex issues and proposing effective, data‑driven solutions.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to convey technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills

  • Master’s degree or advanced certifications in data engineering, cloud architecture, or related disciplines.
  • Hands‑on experience with big‑data technologies such as Apache Spark, Hadoop, or Databricks.
  • Familiarity with programming languages commonly used in data engineering (Python, Scala, Java).
  • Knowledge of data governance, security, and compliance frameworks (e.g., GDPR, CCPA).
  • Experience working in a remote or distributed team environment, demonstrating self‑motivation and accountability.
  • Prior exposure to the aviation, travel, or logistics industry, understanding the unique data challenges and regulatory considerations.

Core Competencies & Abilities

  • Ability to apply engineering principles and technology standards to design and build reliable data solutions.
  • Critical thinking to evaluate alternative approaches, assess trade‑offs, and select optimal strategies for complex problems.
  • Capacity to anticipate the impact of new data sources on existing pipelines and proactively plan for scalability.
  • Skill in recognizing patterns, anomalies, and emerging trends within large data sets, turning insights into actionable recommendations.
  • Strong organizational skills to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Adaptability to shift between strategic planning and hands‑on implementation, balancing long‑term vision with immediate delivery.
  • Collaborative mindset to work effectively with product owners, data scientists, and business leaders, fostering a shared sense of purpose.

Career Growth & Learning Opportunities

At arenaflex, your professional development is a priority. You will have access to:

  • Mentorship programs with senior architects and industry experts.
  • Continuous learning budgets for certifications, conferences, and online courses.
  • Opportunities to lead high‑visibility projects that directly influence company strategy.
  • Cross‑functional rotations that broaden your skill set across data science, product management, and operations.
  • Regular hackathons and innovation challenges that encourage creative problem solving.
