Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated Front End Pharmacy Technician to become an integral member of our long‑term care pharmacy team. In this role, you will focus on accurate data entry, meticulous order processing, and delivering exceptional customer service to internal stakeholders, including pharmacists, nursing staff, and facility administrators. Your contributions will directly impact medication safety, regulatory compliance, and the overall health outcomes of the patients we serve.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform precise order entry for prescription and non‑prescription medication requests, ensuring all required fields are completed accurately.
  • Triaging internal service requests by department, urgency, and required response, and routing them to the appropriate team members.
  • Calculate and verify correct dosages based on prescription details, patient weight, renal function, and other clinical parameters.
  • Assist pharmacists by providing timely information on allergies, drug‑drug interactions, therapeutic duplications, and computer‑generated alerts.
  • Review and expedite narcotic prescription processing to meet regulatory timelines and facility needs.
  • Create, update, and maintain comprehensive patient medication records, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA and state regulations.
  • Collaborate closely with the dispensing pharmacist to resolve any discrepancies, clarify orders, and support safe medication delivery.
  • Provide courteous and knowledgeable assistance to internal customers, answering questions about order status, medication availability, and pharmacy policies.
  • Participate in ongoing quality‑improvement initiatives, including medication safety audits and process optimization projects.
  • Engage in cross‑training opportunities to broaden skill sets across the pharmacy workflow, from front‑end data entry to back‑end verification.

Essential Qualifications

  • Certified, licensed, or registered pharmacy technician status as required by state law.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience working as a pharmacy technician, preferably in a long‑term care or institutional setting.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with pharmacy management software and electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • Strong mathematical aptitude and attention to detail for dosage calculations and verification.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to interact effectively with pharmacists, nurses, and facility staff.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast‑paced environment while maintaining accuracy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience specifically within the long‑term care industry, including familiarity with Medicare Part D and state Medicaid regulations.
  • PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board) National Certification.
  • Experience with narcotic handling protocols and controlled substance documentation.
  • Knowledge of pharmacy compounding practices and sterile preparation techniques.

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required; additional coursework in pharmacy technology or related health sciences is a plus.

Skills & Competencies for Success

  • Analytical Thinking: Ability to interpret prescription data, identify potential errors, and propose corrective actions.
  • Customer‑Centric Mindset: Commitment to delivering responsive, respectful service to internal partners.
  • Team Collaboration: Comfortable working within multidisciplinary teams and contributing to shared goals.
  • Technology Savvy: Proficiency with pharmacy automation tools, barcode scanning, and data entry platforms.
  • Regulatory Awareness: Understanding of federal and state pharmacy regulations, especially those governing long‑term care facilities.
  • Adaptability: Flexibility to adjust to evolving workflows, new software updates, and changing patient needs.
