US College Essay Editor – Ivy League & Top University Applications About CollegePass CollegePass is a global college admissions advisory firm that works one-on-one with high-school students applying to top universities in the US and other leading international destinations. We help students build strong academic profiles, develop compelling application narratives, refine their essays, and present themselves with clarity, authenticity, and confidence. We are looking for a thoughtful and detail-oriented US College Essay Editor to support students applying to highly selective US universities, including Ivy League and other top-tier institutions. Role Overview The US College Essay Editor will help students improve their college application essays, including the Common App personal statement, supplemental essays, activity descriptions, scholarship essays, and other admissions-related writing. This role is ideal for someone with excellent writing and editing skills, strong understanding of personal storytelling, and the ability to improve student essays while preserving the student’s authentic voice. The editor should be able to help students move beyond generic writing and develop essays that are specific, reflective, clear, and emotionally intelligent. This is not a ghostwriting role. The goal is to guide, edit, and elevate student-led writing while maintaining ethical admissions standards. Key Responsibilities 1. Common App & Personal Statement Editing

  • Edit 650-word Common App personal statements for clarity, structure, voice, grammar, tone, and overall impact.
  • Help students identify the central story, personal insight, and emotional arc of their essays.
  • Improve introductions, transitions, reflection, specificity, and conclusions.
  • Help students avoid clichés, vague claims, excessive drama, and over-polished or AI-like phrasing.
  • Ensure essays feel authentic, mature, and student-led.

2. Supplemental Essay Editing

  • Edit university-specific supplemental essays for top US colleges and universities.
  • Help students answer prompts directly while showing fit with the university, programme, community, or academic interest.
  • Strengthen “Why major?”, “Why this college?”, “Community”, “Challenge”, “Diversity”, “Intellectual curiosity”, and “Extracurricular” essays.
  • Ensure essays are specific, concise, and aligned with word limits.
  • Help students avoid generic university praise and develop responses grounded in their actual interests and experiences.

3. Application Narrative Support

  • Work with CollegePass advisors to ensure essays support the student’s broader admissions positioning.
  • Help students present consistent themes across their personal statement, supplemental essays, activities, and academic interests.
  • Identify gaps, repetition, or conflicting messages across an application essay set.
  • Support students in communicating character, curiosity, initiative, resilience, values, and contribution.

4. Editing Feedback & Student Development

  • Provide clear, constructive feedback through Google Docs comments, suggestions, and written notes.
  • Explain major editorial changes where needed so students understand how to improve their writing.
  • Help students develop stronger writing habits, including specificity, reflection, structure, and concise expression.
  • Support multiple rounds of revision while ensuring the student remains the author of the work.

5. Quality Control

  • Proofread final drafts for grammar, spelling, punctuation, formatting, and consistency.
  • Check that essays meet prompt requirements and word limits.
  • Ensure student writing remains ethical, original, and authentic.
  • Maintain confidentiality around student essays, personal stories, and application materials.

Required Qualifications

  • Excellent written English with strong grammar, structure, and editorial judgement.
  • Prior experience editing essays, personal statements, student writing, academic writing, journalism, creative writing, or admissions-related content.
  • Strong understanding of personal narrative, storytelling, reflection, and voice.
  • Ability to improve writing without rewriting the student’s work entirely.
  • Comfort working with high-school students applying to competitive universities.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines during application season.
  • Familiarity with Google Docs comments/suggestions or Microsoft Word Track Changes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience editing US college application essays, Common App essays, or supplemental essays.
  • Familiarity with Ivy League, Stanford, MIT, UChicago, Duke, Northwestern, NYU, USC, UC, liberal arts college, and other selective US application styles.
  • Background in English, journalism, creative writing, communications, education, liberal arts, or a related field.
  • Experience working with international students applying to US universities.
  • Understanding of how admissions essays fit into the broader application strategy.
  • Familiarity with ethical college admissions practices.

Ideal Candidate Profile The ideal candidate is an excellent editor who understands that college essays are not just writing assignments. They are personal, strategic, and reflective pieces that help admissions officers understand how a student thinks, what they value, and how they may contribute to a college community. We are looking for someone who can make essays sharper and more compelling without making every student sound the same. The candidate should be able to preserve voice, identify the emotional centre of a draft, and help students express themselves with honesty and clarity. What Success Looks Like A successful US College Essay Editor will help students:

  • Develop essays that feel personal, specific, and memorable.
  • Improve clarity, structure, grammar, tone, and reflection.
  • Answer prompts directly and effectively.
  • Avoid generic, exaggerated, or AI-like writing.
  • Preserve their authentic voice while improving polish and impact.
  • Submit final drafts that are thoughtful, clean, and application-ready.

Sample Responsibilities

  • Edit a 650-word Common App essay for structure, voice, and reflection.
  • Review a 250-word “Why this college?” supplemental essay for specificity and fit.
  • Provide feedback on a student’s full supplemental essay set.
  • Help reduce a 400-word essay to 250 words while preserving the strongest ideas.
  • Proofread final application essays before submission.
  • Flag essays that feel generic, over-edited, unclear, or misaligned with the prompt.

Employment Type Part-time / Freelance / Contract Remote Time Commitment Flexible, based on student needs and admissions timelines. Availability during peak US admissions season is preferred.

Compensation

  • Compensation will be based on experience, editing quality, turnaround time, and scope of work.
