About arenaflex

Born out of a legacy of moving nearly 20 million packages each day and managing vast, complex streams of operational data, arenaflex stands at the intersection of physical logistics and digital innovation. arenaflex is an organization purpose-built to connect the tangible and the digital, solving today’s most intricate challenges while preparing for the opportunities of tomorrow. Our mission is bold yet focused: we harness the power of data to redefine what is possible in the transportation and logistics industry, creating value for our customers, our team members, and the world at large.

At arenaflex, we believe that data is more than numbers on a page—it is the lifeblood of every decision, every route optimized, every customer experience elevated. We are explorers of insight, builders of intelligent systems, and catalysts for transformation. Our work is guided by four foundational pillars: investigating and leveraging data to define and solve real-world problems, removing barriers between datasets to unlock new avenues of knowledge, designing and iterating on solutions that produce measurable value, and acting as change agents to advance curiosity, performance, and innovation across the enterprise.

We are now expanding our world-class team and seeking an experienced, visionary Principal Data Scientist to lead end-to-end analytical initiatives, develop large-scale machine learning solutions, and shape the future of intelligent logistics at arenaflex.

Position Overview

As a Principal Data Scientist at arenaflex, you will serve as a senior technical leader within our data science organization, working remotely from anywhere in the United States. You will architect and deliver cutting-edge solutions that span artificial intelligence, machine learning, statistical analysis, and operations research. Your work will directly influence cost reduction, efficiency improvement, and customer experience enhancement across the arenaflex network.

This is not a back-office role—it is a high-impact position where you will collaborate with executive audiences, mentor cross-functional teams, unblock complex technical challenges, and push the boundaries of what data science can achieve at scale. If you thrive in environments that demand both deep technical mastery and strategic thinking, this opportunity is designed for you.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and deployment of large-scale machine learning and AI solutions that deliver sustained, tangible business value to arenaflex.
  • Direct end-to-end analytical investigations, including requirements gathering, data acquisition, processing, modeling, and presentation of insights to senior leadership.
  • Apply advanced data science techniques—iteratively refining analysis pipelines—to deliver insights at enterprise scale.
  • Build and deploy robust, complex production systems that execute modern data science methods reliably and efficiently.
  • Lead multi-functional project teams, providing technical guidance, mentorship, and thought leadership across the organization.
  • Serve as an "expert hacker" and technical troubleshooter, unblocking particularly difficult challenges for distributed teams and resolving issues while they are still being defined.
  • Context-switch effectively across multiple high-priority initiatives, balancing strategic direction with hands-on technical execution.
  • Apply operations research methodologies—including optimization, algorithms, and mathematical modeling—to reduce cost and increase operational efficiency.
  • Present findings, recommendations, and technical concepts clearly and persuasively to executive audiences, translating complex analyses into actionable business strategy.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of the transportation industry, competitive landscape, and emerging technologies to keep arenaflex at the forefront of innovation.
  • Champion the use of agile and DevOps practices for project and software management, including continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD).
  • Collaborate using version control systems and conduct rigorous code reviews to maintain engineering excellence.

Essential Qualifications

  • A graduate degree (Master’s or PhD preferred) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Operations Research, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related quantitative discipline. A Bachelor’s degree with exceptional, directly relevant experience will also be considered.
  • A minimum of eight (8) years of professional work experience applying data science (including AI, machine learning, and statistical analysis), operations research (optimization, algorithms, mathematical modeling), and data analytics to solve real business problems.
  • Extensive knowledge of advanced data science and machine learning techniques, including the iterative development of analytical pipelines that deliver insights at scale.
  • Demonstrated experience leading end-to-end analytical investigations—from requirements specification through to final presentation and stakeholder communication.
  • Solid experience providing leadership in a general training or consulting capacity, with a track record of influencing and guiding diverse audiences.
  • Strong experience as a leader of multi-functional project teams, with proven ability to align technical execution to business strategy.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present and convey complex technical concepts effectively to executive audiences.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A related postgraduate degree (Master’s or PhD) in a quantitative or computational discipline; advanced degrees may offset equivalent years of experience.
  • Master-level expertise in a specific class of modeling or analytical methods, often supported by published research or applied industry work.
  • Deep theoretical grounding in the mathematical foundations of data science, including linear algebra, vector analytics, and probability theory.
  • Hands-on experience designing and deploying large-scale technical solutions that have delivered ongoing, measurable value.

Technical Skills and Competencies

  • Strong technical background in computer science, data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, statistics, or another quantitative and computational discipline.
  • A compelling history of designing and shipping large-scale technical solutions that deliver tangible, ongoing value.
  • Direct experience building and deploying robust, complex production systems that implement current data scientific methods at scale.
  • Comfort working with distributed teams on code-based deliverables, using version control systems and conducting thorough code reviews.
  • An "engineering" mindset—able to make rapid, pragmatic decisions to improve performance, accelerate progress, and maximize impact.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with most of the following languages, frameworks, and tools:
    • Machine Learning Frameworks: Scikit-learn, XGBoost, TensorFlow, PyTorch, MLlib, and other core ML libraries.
    • Programming Languages: Python, Scala, Java, and other modern programming languages.
    • Data Platforms & Tools: MLflow, Databricks, Spark, Kafka, and related data engineering ecosystems.
    • Optimization & Modeling Packages: CPLEX, Gurobi, and similar optimization modeling tools.
  • Solid understanding of the mathematical "natives" of data science, including expertise in Linear Algebra and Vector Analytics.
  • Working knowledge of agile and DevOps practices for project and software management, including continuous integration and continuous delivery.

What We Offer

  • Competitive Compensation: A compensation package designed to attract and retain top-tier talent, with performance-based incentives and a comprehensive benefits offering.
  • Remote-First Flexibility: Work from anywhere within the United States. We believe great work happens when you have the space to do your best thinking.
  • Health & Wellness: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, mental health support, and wellness programs designed to keep you and your family thriving.

  • Paid Time Off: Generous vacation, sick leave, and paid holidays so you can recharge and bring your best self to work.

  • Cutting-Edge Tools: Work with the latest technologies, frameworks, and platforms in data science, machine learning, and cloud infrastructure.
