Our mission is to empower millions of customers worldwide with secure, fast, and intelligent solutions. Joining arenaflex means becoming part of a forward‑thinking community that values innovation, diversity, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated Remote Big Data Engineer to join our dynamic technology group. In this role you will design, develop, and maintain large‑scale data pipelines that power critical business applications. You will work side‑by‑side with senior architects, data scientists, and product owners in an open, collaborative environment where your ideas are heard and your technical choices matter. This is a full‑time, remote‑first position based in Phoenix, USA, offering a competitive rate of $28 per hour.

Key Responsibilities

  • End‑to‑end data engineering: Build, test, and deploy robust data pipelines using Hadoop, Spark, Hive, and PySpark to ingest, transform, and store petabytes of structured and unstructured data.
  • Code quality & reviews: Write clean, maintainable code following best‑practice standards; actively participate in peer code reviews, automated testing, and continuous integration pipelines.
  • Performance optimization: Diagnose bottlenecks, refactor inefficient queries, and implement caching or partitioning strategies to ensure sub‑second latency for high‑volume workloads.
  • Automation & CI/CD: Develop automated deployment scripts, containerize services with Docker, and integrate pipelines into Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or similar CI/CD tools.
  • Collaboration with data science teams: Translate analytical models into production‑ready data services, enabling real‑time scoring and batch analytics for fraud detection, recommendation engines, and risk management.
  • Mentorship & leadership: Guide junior engineers, champion agile practices, and help shape the technical roadmap for the data platform.
  • Innovation & open‑source contribution: Contribute to internal and external open‑source projects, share knowledge through tech talks, and stay ahead of emerging trends in big data and cloud technologies.

Essential Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related discipline.
  • Experience: Minimum 3 years of professional software development experience, with at least 2 years focused on big data technologies (Hadoop, Spark, Hive, PySpark).
  • Technical expertise: Strong command of Java, Python, or Scala; deep understanding of data warehousing concepts; hands‑on experience with SQL, Hive, and complex join optimization.
  • Unix/Linux proficiency: Comfortable scripting in Bash or other shell languages; familiar with Linux system administration for production environments.
  • Data pipeline design: Proven ability to architect and implement batch and streaming pipelines that handle high‑throughput, low‑latency requirements.
  • Collaboration tools: Experience with Git, GitHub/Bitbucket, and CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps, etc.).
  • Analytical mindset: Ability to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions and to communicate complex concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills

  • Experience with cloud platforms such as GCP or AWS, including services like BigQuery, Dataflow, or Redshift.
  • Knowledge of micro‑services architecture and container orchestration (Kubernetes, Docker Swarm).
  • Familiarity with streaming technologies such as Apache Kafka, Flink, or Pulsar.
  • Exposure to NoSQL databases (HBase, Couchbase, MongoDB) and their integration with big data ecosystems.
  • Understanding of financial services data domains (transactions, fraud, risk) and regulatory compliance considerations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a track record of influencing cross‑functional teams.
  • Demonstrated passion for continuous learning, open‑source contribution, and community involvement.

Core Competencies for Success

  • Problem‑solving: Ability to dissect complex data challenges, propose elegant solutions, and iterate quickly.
  • Ownership: Take end‑to‑end responsibility for the reliability, scalability, and security of data services.
  • Teamwork: Thrive in a collaborative, remote‑first environment, respecting diverse perspectives and fostering inclusive dialogue.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable navigating fast‑changing priorities, emerging technologies, and evolving business needs.
  • Leadership: Inspire peers, mentor junior talent, and champion best practices across the organization.

arenaflex invests heavily in employee development. As a Big Data Engineer you will have access to:

  • Annual learning stipend for certifications, conferences, or online courses (e.g., Cloudera, AWS, GCP).

  • Opportunities to lead high‑visibility projects that directly impact millions of customers.
  • Rotational assignments across product lines, allowing you to broaden your expertise in payments, travel, and analytics.
