[Remote] Senior Product Designer, Payments & Embedded Finance
Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. Advanced Tech Placement is seeking a Senior Product Designer specializing in Payments & Embedded Finance. This role involves owning the end-to-end design for the payments experience of a legal B2B platform, focusing on creating a seamless and trustworthy payment process for law firms.
Responsibilities
- Unify fragmented billing, invoicing, payments, and trust-accounting surfaces into one coherent experience
- Create simple mental models for complex financial objects: invoices, payments, retainers, refunds, disputes, payouts, and reconciliation
- Design robust patterns for payment states, error recovery, and edge cases (failed charges, chargebacks, partial payments, multi-currency, tax)
- Reduce time from signup to first successful payment with guided setup, processor connection, templates, checklists, and strong empty states
- Partner with PM/Data to define payment activation metrics and instrument funnels processor connection rate, first invoice sent, first payment received, time-to-paid
- Design plan → act → confirm loops for agents that draft invoices from time entries, send reminders, prepare dispute responses, and reconcile transactions
- Make AI actions understandable and reversible with previews, citations, audit trails, and undo/rollback
- Build clear approval and permission patterns where AI proposes and humans confirm
- Design mobile workflows for on-the-go invoicing, payment capture, expense logging, and approvals, robust to offline/poor connectivity and sync conflicts
- Ensure parity with web where it matters (auditability, traceability) without forcing identical UI
- Design using a token-driven system that compiles to web/iOS/Android
- Improve consistency and speed through component usage, patterns, and governance
- Use lightweight, high-signal methods: heuristic reviews, task-based usability, journey mapping, first-click testing, card/tree testing, surveys, and analytics triangulation
- Ensure accessibility is built-in (WCAG 2.2 AA baseline)
- Write clear decision memos, design briefs, and documentation
- Run design reviews focused on tradeoffs and measurable impact
Skills
- 7–10 years in product design for B2B software (complex workflows, permissions, data-heavy UI)
- Direct experience designing payments, billing, invoicing, or other money-movement UX
- Proven experience leading large UX improvements (platform consolidation, IA redesign, or major product redesign)
- Strong onboarding/activation track record with measurable outcomes
- Experience designing and contributing to a design system (components, tokens, governance)
- Comfortable collaborating deeply with engineering (APIs, constraints, edge cases, instrumentation)
- Solid research craft and ability to turn findings into shipped improvements
- Clear written communication: concise docs, options/risks, recommendations
- Treat AI as part of the design production workflow, not a novelty
- Move from static mockups to system-driven UI generation (tokens/components/patterns → generated UI)
- Use AI tools to accelerate exploration, UI drafting, variants, and spec handoff — while maintaining quality and consistency
- Collaborate with engineering to make design outputs implementation-ready, not just visually polished
- Hands-on experience with Stripe (Connect, Billing, Elements, Checkout) or comparable platforms
- Familiarity with payments concepts: PCI scope, SCA/3DS, ACH, payouts, multi-currency, tax, chargebacks
- LegalTech exposure, especially trust accounting (IOLTA), client billing, retainers, or LEDES
- Fintech experience in invoicing, AR/AP, or subscription billing UX
- Familiarity with ShadCN, atomic design, or design-to-code workflows
- Comfort reading API docs; basic SQL literacy
- Experience with pricing/packaging UX or value fences
- NN/g training/certification (or equivalent)
