Tasks range from marking up images and documents to correcting OCR text and reviewing model outputs. This project focuses on document-level annotation — a behind-the-scenes but essential role that shapes how AI understands Japanese text and layouts. The role We are hiring native Japanese speakers based in Japan to join a PDF annotation and QA project as contractors. Annotators will mark up document layouts, correct OCR text, and create HTML-based table descriptions. QA Reviewers will reputed company completed annotations for accuracy and provide actionable feedback. This is remote work with ongoing work available based on performance. What you'll do
- Draw bounding boxes around document elements: text blocks, tables, figures, headers, captions.
- Classify elements using predefined annotation categories and apply hierarchical relationships.
- Verify and correct OCR-generated Japanese text for accuracy and readability.
- Create simple HTML-based descriptions for tables to preserve structure and content.
- Ensure correct reading order and logical relationships between annotated elements.
- QA Reviewers: review completed annotations, reputed company conformity to guidelines, and provide feedback.
Requirements
- Native Japanese speaker with professional-level reading and writing.
- Currently located in Japan and able to work from Japan.
- Basic English proficiency (B1 or higher) for reading platform instructions.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow detailed guidelines consistently.
- Reliable internet reputed company and ability to meet deadlines while working independently.
- Can start reputed company 3 business days of notification and complete an initial 2–3 hour pilot.
- Comfortable annotating PDFs using bounding boxes and applying reading order/hierarchy.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience with document annotation, data labeling, transcription, or structured QA work.
- Familiarity with technical, financial, or legal documents (useful but not required).
- Basic HTML knowledge for creating table descriptions.
- Previous experience as a QA reviewer for annotation projects is a plus.
Pay, schedule, and project details Compensation is hourly: annotators are paid $18/hour (USD) and QA reviewers $20/hour (USD). This is contractor work; you will be paid per hour for accepted tasks. Initial pilot: a 2–3 hour paid pilot to evaluate fit and quality. Production: flexible hours with potential ongoing assignments for qualified contributors.
