Role Overview

We are seeking a seasoned Principal DevOps Engineer – Data Platform to lead the design, implementation, and evolution of arenaflex’s DevOps tooling, practices, and culture. This senior individual contributor role will shape the technical roadmap for our data platform, ensuring it meets the highest standards of reliability, scalability, security, and cost efficiency. The position is fully remote, offering a competitive hourly rate of $26, and is based out of our Seattle hub for occasional collaborative sessions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and drive the DevOps strategy for the enterprise‑wide data platform, aligning with business objectives and regulatory requirements.
  • Architect, implement, and maintain infrastructure‑as‑code (IaC) solutions using Terraform, Ansible, or comparable tools to provision and manage resources across multi‑cloud environments (GCP, Azure, AWS).
  • Design, build, and optimize CI/CD pipelines with Jenkins, CircleCI, GitLab, or similar platforms to enable rapid, reliable, and repeatable application delivery.
  • Collaborate closely with security and compliance teams to embed best‑in‑class security controls, vulnerability scanning, and auditability into every stage of the delivery pipeline.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and continuously improve platform performance using observability stacks such as Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, and cloud‑native logging services.
  • Lead incident response and post‑mortem analyses, driving root‑cause identification and preventive action plans.
  • Mentor junior engineers, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing, automation, and relentless improvement.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices, and champion their adoption where they add measurable value.
  • Partner with product, data engineering, and analytics teams to ensure seamless integration of data pipelines, APIs, and services.
  • Document architectural decisions, operational runbooks, and standard operating procedures to promote transparency and reproducibility.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline.
  • Minimum 8 years of hands‑on experience in DevOps, site reliability engineering, or platform engineering roles, with a focus on large‑scale data platforms.
  • Proven expertise in public cloud environments (GCP preferred, Azure or AWS acceptable) and container orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Deep understanding of infrastructure‑as‑code principles and practical experience with Terraform, Ansible, or equivalent tools.
  • Extensive experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins, CircleCI, GitLab CI, or similar automation frameworks.
  • Strong scripting/programming skills in Python, Go, or Bash, with the ability to develop reusable automation components.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex, ambiguous problems through analytical thinking and systematic troubleshooting.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, capable of influencing cross‑functional teams and senior leadership.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands‑on experience with observability and monitoring tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, or Cloud Logging services.
  • Knowledge of security best practices in DevOps, including secret management, vulnerability scanning, compliance automation, and secure deployment patterns.
  • Familiarity with generative AI platforms or advanced analytics pipelines, and the ability to integrate AI‑driven insights into operational workflows.
  • Experience leading technical mentorship programs, workshops, or internal training initiatives for junior engineers.
  • Certifications such as Google Cloud Professional DevOps Engineer, AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, or Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA).

Core Skills & Competencies

  • Cloud Architecture: Ability to design resilient, multi‑region architectures that meet performance SLAs and cost targets.
  • Automation Mindset: Passion for eliminating manual toil through code, scripts, and self‑service tooling.
  • Observability & Reliability: Expertise in building health checks, alerts, and dashboards that provide real‑time insight into system behavior.
  • Security & Compliance: Understanding of HIPAA, GDPR, and other health‑care regulations, and how to embed compliance into CI/CD pipelines.
