About arenaflex

arenaflex is a global leader in financial services technology, delivering innovative payment solutions to millions of customers worldwide. With a heritage of more than a century in the industry, arenaflex has continuously reinvented itself by embracing cutting‑edge technologies, open‑source collaboration, and a culture that empowers every employee to shape the future of digital commerce. As part of arenaflex’s commitment to building a resilient, data‑driven ecosystem, we are expanding our remote engineering teams to create high‑performance, cloud‑native data platforms that power real‑time transaction processing, fraud detection, and personalized customer experiences.

Why This Role Matters

In today’s fast‑moving financial landscape, data is the lifeblood of every decision. As a Data Engineer at arenaflex, you will be at the heart of a mission‑critical architecture that ingests, processes, and serves petabytes of transaction data across hybrid cloud environments. Your work will directly influence the reliability, scalability, and security of the services that millions of merchants and consumers depend on every day. This is not just a job; it’s an opportunity to leave a lasting imprint on the future of global payments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain robust, low‑latency data pipelines that handle both batch and streaming workloads in a hybrid cloud (on‑premise + public cloud) environment.
  • Collaborate with software architects, product owners, and data scientists to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
  • Implement end‑to‑end data processing frameworks using Java or Scala, ensuring code quality, performance, and maintainability.
  • Build and iterate on proof‑of‑concepts (POCs) to evaluate emerging technologies such as Apache Flink, Kafka Streams, and novel storage engines.
  • Develop comprehensive system design documents, including high‑level architecture diagrams, component interaction flows, and detailed API specifications.
  • Lead the integration of NoSQL databases (Cassandra, Elasticsearch) and in‑memory data grids to support real‑time analytics and search capabilities.
  • Drive continuous improvement by staying abreast of industry trends, open‑source innovations, and best practices in data engineering, DevOps, and cloud native architectures.
  • Mentor junior engineers, conduct code reviews, and foster a culture of learning, experimentation, and shared ownership.
  • Partner with cross‑functional teams—including security, compliance, and operations—to embed resilience, observability, and governance into every data service.
  • Participate in on‑call rotations and incident response, applying root‑cause analysis to improve system reliability and reduce mean time to recovery (MTTR).

Essential Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of professional experience designing and implementing data processing systems using Java or Scala.
  • Data Engineering Skills: Proven expertise in building data pipelines, working with streaming platforms (e.g., Kafka), and handling large‑scale data storage solutions such as Cassandra and Elasticsearch.
  • Cloud & Containerization: Hands‑on experience with Docker, Kubernetes, or OpenShift for deploying and managing microservices in production.
  • Algorithmic Thinking: Strong understanding of data structures, memory models, and concurrency patterns inherent to the JVM.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Collaboration: Demonstrated ability to work effectively in distributed, remote teams, contributing to a positive and inclusive team culture.

Preferred Qualifications & Additional Skills

  • Experience with real‑time data processing frameworks such as Apache Flink, Spark Structured Streaming, or similar.
  • Deep knowledge of message‑driven architectures using Apache Kafka, including producer/consumer patterns, topic design, and stream processing.
  • Proficiency in building and operating microservices that expose RESTful or gRPC APIs, with a focus on high availability and fault tolerance.
  • Familiarity with continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, infrastructure‑as‑code tools (Terraform, Ansible), and monitoring stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK).
  • Understanding of security best practices for data at rest and in transit, including encryption, tokenization, and compliance frameworks (PCI‑DSS, GDPR).
  • Experience mentoring teams, delivering technical training, and influencing architectural decisions across multiple product lines.
  • Passion for open‑source contribution and community involvement, with a track record of submitting patches or maintaining libraries.

Core Skills & Competencies

  • Problem Solving: Ability to break down complex data challenges into actionable engineering tasks.
  • Performance Optimization: Expertise in profiling, benchmarking, and tuning data pipelines for low latency and high throughput.
  • Resilience Engineering: Knowledge of designing for fault isolation, graceful degradation, and automated recovery.
  • Data Modeling: Skill in designing schemas for both relational and NoSQL stores, balancing consistency, availability, and partition tolerance.
  • Collaboration Tools: Proficiency with version control (Git), issue tracking (Jira), and agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban).
  • Learning Agility: Demonstrated curiosity and ability to quickly adopt new technologies and frameworks.

Career Growth & Learning Opportunities

arenaflex invests heavily in the professional development of its engineers. As a Data Engineer, you will have access to:

  • Mentorship programs pairing you with senior architects and industry experts.

  • Opportunities to lead high‑visibility projects that influence the company’s strategic roadmap.
  • Cross‑functional rotations that allow you to explore data science, product management, or infrastructure engineering pathways.
  • Participation in internal hackathons and open‑source initiatives, with recognition for innovative contributions.
